Nice Answer

Consider these lines from the extract "All the world's a stage":

And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow...

What do these lines refer to?  Also, do you think this description is still accurate today?  Explain.

-->  "The lines of the extract explain the lover's deep passion which because of his youth and immaturity turns out to be comic and hilarious.  The songs he writes are about the mistress' eyebrow, which confirms his incapability and unawareness to judge things properly.  In my opinion, the same happens nowadays with children in love but to a smaller extent because due to technological development, children find other ways to express their feelings.  For instance, they may exchange emails."

Funny student...

The assignment was to write a paragraph comparing and contrasting two characters we had read about.  The paragraph was to be at least 8 sentences in length.  (A random guideline, I admit, just to make sure that they wrote something meaningful rather than some one-sentence blurp.)

My student Thanasis wrote an excellent paragraph, and at the end he included a disclaimer:

"I didn't write so many sentences, because as you see, I used many linking words to create complex sentences."

More Student Work

A former student (13-year-old) from last year shared these poems...

"the eyes can't see"

I look through walls.
I can.
But I see awful things.
Empty faces / People talking;
what they say
has no meaning.
I see everything
through the dark mirrors of my heart,
through the open windows of my mind.
Not with the eyes.
Eyes can't see the truth.
Not our eyes.

"Written for You"

Her eyes glow.
So sensitive.
She knows what I want, but...
she's not sure.
Her hair, I love.
So beautiful.
She likes something about me.
I wish I knew how she feels,
if she suffers without me,
like I suffer without her.
The only one I really need.

I feel something,
I don't know what.
But...
I love feeling that way.
Her lips, I kissed once.
Those lips kissed mine.
It was summer - warm -
I think, I remember.

Her scent is charming.
A face always calm, unless...
A creature that came from heaven -
or hell.
Perfect - and yet (so) destructive for my life.
Came from another world - I'm sure.
And like a stormy wind
disturbed the waters of my heart.
So nice to be a human -
so unpredictable.
But always full of harmony and beauty.

Student Work

After reading Shel Silverstein's poem "Whatif", one of my 12-year-old ESL students wrote this poem.  I thought it was so cute!

Yesterday, when I was sitting at home
I discovered I was all alone
I was reading a fairytale about a king
when suddenly I started thinking
Thinking about all the "why do" questions
I have inside my mind.

Why do I have a cat?
Why can't I buy a hat?
Why do tests take so long?
Why do I have a favourite song?
Why do I have to go to school
when it doesn't even have a pool?
Why do I have to feel this pain at my chest
every time we have a test?
Why do I have to answer now
when I don't know how?

Everything is fine and then
I start to think again.
